Thousands Flock to Watch Burning Grasslands in Japan

About 3,500 people gathered in Kushimoto Town, Wakayama Prefecture, to witness a traditional grass-burning festival on January 19.

The event began after 5:30 p.m. Flaming arrows were shot into the dry grass to eliminate harmful insects and stimulate new plant growth. Around 100,000 square meters of grassland in Kushimoto Town were set ablaze, lighting up the night sky.

The ignition ritual was carried out by members of an archery club from a local high school. Firefighters and event organizers were on standby throughout the event to ensure safety. After about an hour, the entire grassland had burned down, producing crackling sounds as it turned to ash.

According to the Kushimoto Tourism Association, this year’s event attracted approximately 3,500 local residents and visitors. Many spectators watched closely and took photos as the flames flickered in the darkness.

A woman in her 70s said it was her first time witnessing the event in person and that she felt “deeply moved.” Another male visitor said the sight left both him and his son unable to look away.

The fire festival in Kushimoto is a traditional winter ritual held to welcome spring and renew vegetation. Burning dry grass has long been a local farming practice to eliminate pests and create favorable conditions for new shoots as the weather warms. After about two months, fresh grass sprouts emerge, turning the once-burned area green again.

According to local records, the ritual later evolved into a community festival that both preserves traditional agricultural practices and serves as a cultural and tourism highlight of Kushimoto.

In addition to the grass-burning ceremony, locals also organize activities showcasing regional cuisine and local products, encouraging visitors to stay longer.
