Trump T1 Smartphone Faces Calls for Investigation

Several U.S. lawmakers have sent a letter urging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to intervene after the Trump T1 smartphone was delayed for months despite collecting an estimated USD 59 million in pre-order deposits.

The Trump T1 smartphone project was introduced in June 2024 by Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump through a newly established company called Trump Mobile. The product was initially promised to ship in August of the same year. However, as of mid-January 2026, customers have yet to receive their devices.

According to PhoneArena, data indicates that around 590,000 consumers paid a USD 100 deposit for the smartphone, which carries a listed retail price of USD 499. This brought Trump Mobile’s total deposit revenue to approximately USD 59 million. In addition to the failure to deliver the product, the Trump T1 was advertised as “Made in the USA,” a claim that was later revised to “designed with American pride”—a phrase commonly used for products manufactured overseas.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, along with 10 Democratic lawmakers, sent a letter calling on the FTC to investigate Trump Mobile for “potential violations of consumer protection laws.” NBC News quoted the letter as stating that the FTC should pay close attention to “deceptive practices involving deposits for products that are never delivered.”

Doubts about the very existence of the Trump T1 began to surface when promotional images were suspected of being heavily edited or created using Photoshop. In different advertising campaigns, the phone at times appeared to resemble a gold-plated iPhone 16 Pro, and at other times looked like a Galaxy S25 Ultra fitted with a case.

After missing the initial August delivery deadline, Trump Mobile told USA Today that the release had been postponed to October. However, the new timeline passed with no further updates. Videos circulating on social media show that pre-order customers were unable to reach customer support, while some reported being told that delivery would take place in the first quarter of 2026.

Trump Mobile blamed a 43-day U.S. government shutdown for disrupting the certification process with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). However, the shutdown occurred from October 1 to November 11, while the original delivery date had been scheduled for August.

Initially, the Trump T1 was said to feature a 6.78-inch AMOLED display, which was later revised to 6.25 inches, with a 120 Hz refresh rate and a punch-hole front camera. Experts speculate that the device would be powered by a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset, paired with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. The camera system is expected to include a 50 MP main sensor and two 2 MP secondary lenses. The phone is also expected to retain a 3.5 mm headphone jack—a feature removed from most modern smartphones—and run Android 15.
